Besides the departments, 4 research group leaders with their teams are currently established at the institute. Research groups are department-independent groups that have their own budgets - mostly with external financial resources.

On 1 May 2024, Mauricio Rocha-Martins started a new research group at the Institute: Embryo Self-correction.

On 1 January 2025, Kate Miroshnikova started a new research group at the Institute: Biophysical Regulation of Cell State Dynamics.

Apart from these groups, Professor emeritus Dr. Hans R. Schöler and Professor emeritus Dr. Dietmar Vestweber continue their employment for the Max Planck Society.
