Scientists in Münster program skin cells to brain cells to facilitate neurological research

March 06, 2017

Whether it be mental math, writing and reading or learning a new language: brain cells give us astonishing brainpower every day. When these cells are damaged by neurological disease, it is not possible to take a sample and analyse the cells. Scientsits of the University of Münster and the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Biomedicine broke the moulds and created brain cells of interest, in this case oligodendrocytes, by themselves - from skin. The team is one of a few worldwide who have realised this process succesfully. However, the team in Münster can do this much faster and more efficiently - with significant benefit for research.
