On Sunday, April 15, 2012, stem cell researchers of the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Biomedicine (MPI) in Münster opened their labs for interested citizens and explained their current research approaches. The "Open stem cell lab-day" took place in the framework of the 10th anniversary of the Stem Cell Network North Rhine Westphalia and attracted more than 100 visitors. The Network celebrates its jubilee year with numerous actions that focus on information events for citizens, patients, physicians, pupils and teachers. Words of welcome were addressed by the Minister for Innovation, Science and Research, Svenja Schulze. Daniel Esch and Susanne Höing, both scientists in the Department for Cell and Developmental Biology, held a presentation in which they explained the basics of stem cell research and showed the current research approaches of the Department. Afterwards, the visitors could see the laboratories, take a microscopic glance at stem cells and ask questions to scientists in expert discussions. The Stem Cell Network North Rhine Westphalia bundles up the stem cell research activities in North Rhine Westphalia, fosters junior scientists and stimulates the dialogue with society. Also the MPI in Münster is an active member of this german-wide unique network and the researchers of the MPI had the pleasure to celebrate its birthday here in Münster.
